19th Century Carnelian Intaglio Fob Seal ‘Je ne change qu’en mourant’

This antique watch fob would have originally been worn on a pocket watch chain as both a counterbalance and a display of personal wealth and taste. The seal on the bottom could be used to close off personal correspondence with a dot of hot wax. 

Its carnelian seal is carved with an intaglio in mirror image, which can be read once you press it onto wax. The intaglio depicts a leaf, with the French motto: ‘Je ne change qu’en mourant‘ which translates to ‘I only change in death‘. 

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: 40 x 31 x 24 mm. The seal measures 27 x 21 mm. 

Weight: 13.10 grams.

Age: Early 19th Century, circa 1800. 

Material: The mount was tested at the assay office as 235/1000 gold; please note that this is below the legal gold limit. 

Condition: In good antique condition with some minor wear, consistent with its age. The seal is still in great condition with no chips or damages. The mount is in great condition too.
