This 19th-century wax seal wheel is not only practical, but also an impressive little artwork to exhibit on one’s desk!
In the early 19th Century, letters were often sealed with hot wax. Most avid letter writers would have their personal seal, for instance bearing their initials. This brass etui folds out into five trays, which originally housed 50 double-sided seals, of which 27 are still present. The cap has been fitted with a screw mechanism in which originally, the seal you want to use can be secured and used. This mechanism is currently no longer functioning.
The seals are double sided and each depict an image with an accompanying motto, which I believe to read:
- An arrow: āA mon butā / A star: āVeille sur ce que l’aimeā.
-
A leaf: āJe ne change qu’en mourantā / A reed stem: āLe trop m’accabreā.
-
A thundercloud: āJe brave toutā / A leaf that falls in a pond: āJe romps et ne poir pasā.
-
A tortoise: ‘Doucement mais sĆ»re’ / A leafless tree: āJ’attends un beau jourā.
-
A cupid playing with a ball: āJe bouleverseā / Two clasped hands: āPour toujoursā.
-
A flower in the sun: āJe languis loin de toiā / Cupid hacking a rock: āAvec le tempsā.
- A harp: āA qui touche je repondsā / Cupid leaning on an anchor: āSans toi je meursā.
- A bird flying from its cage: āQui me neglige me perdā / An open folding knife: āJe pars pour revenirā.
- A heart: āA Vousā / Two birds:Ā āGuerre Ć l’inconstanceā.
- A symbol of time: āLe temps nous uniraā / A dog resting near a grave: āFidele jusqu’au tombeauā.
- A heart: āUn seul me suffitā / A swallow: āLe froid me chasseā.
- An envelope: āDitte Ouiā / Cupid walking a dog: āLa fidelite me guideā.
- Two birds holding a knotted rope: āPlus long plus serreā / A butterfly on a flower: āJāattendsā.
- An owl: āSois sage comme luiā / A running dog carrying a letter: āReviens viteā.
- A butterfly on a rose: āJe me fixeā / A bouquet of flowers: āA present et toujoursā.
- An anchor: āJe consoleā / A rising sun: āJe reviendraiā.
- A letter: āelle a douce les peines de l’abbsenceāĀ / a bird perched on a pole.Ā
- A child pointing to a star: āSi je te peeds je suis perduā /Ā a compass: āJe te tousez si tu negeanceā.
- A quill: āLa langue des absenceā /Ā A tree: āa l’epreuvr du tempsā.
- Two clasped hands: āAmitie jusqu’Ć eternityāĀ / A hammer:Ā āSi je frappe je fixeā.Ā

GENERAL INFORMATIONĀ
Size: 108 x 26 x 13 mm: each seal measuresĀ
Weight: 133 grams
Age: Early 19th Century, circa 1840s.Ā
Condition: In antique condition with signs of wear and use. The front of the etui has come loose: it will need a new screw to secure it properly. Originally, the seal holder came with a scew mechanism that held the seal in place, but this is missing. Therefore you will have to use the seals with your hands or a different seal holder.Ā
The seals are in good condition but some are more difficult to read than others, and some have signs of use or oxidation marks.Ā
