This novelty stick pin depicts a Venetian masquerade mask, with the eyes set with rose-cut diamonds.

A masquerade ball is a formal event where the attendees wear costumes and/or masks to conceal their identity. Originating in Venice in the 15th Century as a part of the Carnival season, this pastime became very popular

in 17th- and 18th-Century Europe. They became so popular that jewellery depicting masks became a trend too, especially in the second half of the 18th Century.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: 76 mm long: the mask measures 14 x 16 mm.

Weight: 2.75 grams.

Age: Late 18th Century, also known as the Georgian era, circa 1770s.

Material: Acid tested as 18k gold.

Condition: In good antique condition with only minor wear, consistent with age. The enamel had a scratch when I found it, which I had restored by an expert.
